Trying to nail down some of the best books of all time would be hard. But everyone has their preferences. These are some of my personal favorites that have helped me through the years. Each one of them is a masterpiece in its own way. I recommend them all highly.

The Great Divorce
by C. S. Lewis

This is my favorite book of all time.  In this short fantasy novel Lewis explores what Heaven and Hell may really be like.  But the real thrust of the book tries to answer the question, “ Why do people reject God?” “There are only two kinds of people in the end: Those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, in the end, ‘Thy will be done.’ All that are in Hell choose it.  Without that self –choice there could be no Hell.”

Celebration of Discipline
by Richard Foster

This is a must read for all Christians.  I know the title sounds awful, but you’ll be surprised once you get into it.  Foster shows us that the disciplines of the Christian life are not  dull rules but actually are the pathways to real joy and abundant life.  The other great thing about Foster is that he takes hard concepts and makes them easily readable.  I found myself trying disciplines I had avoided because he makes them so accessible to normal people.  READ THIS BOOK!

Disappointment with God
by Philip Yancey

You have to love an honest title.  I give this book out a lot.  Yancey is a great writer because he is not preachy, yet thinks deeply and unflinchingly about the hard issues of life.  In this book he tackles the questions: Is God unfair? Is God silent? Is God hidden?  Beware: Yancey doesn’t claim to know the answers to all these questions, but his honest approach makes him an excellent companion as we try to deal with real life frustrations and pain.  For all of those who feel disappointed in their walk with God or in their circumstances, this is a must read.

Perelandra
by C. S. Lewis

The #2 book of all time for me.  Even if you’re not into science fiction there’s a lot to be enjoyed here.  Lewis explores the idea of what the Fall might have looked like had Satan been given an extended dialogue with Eve.  The imagery is breathtaking and the theology is both challenging and comforting.  Expect to have your ideas about mankind, Heaven, and God’s creativity broadened considerably.

Abide in Christ
by Andrew Murray

Why this book can be found in bargain bins I will never know.  Written by an old puritan, this 31 day devotional guides us to knowing Christ in an intimate way on a daily basis.  For all those who have said that really walking with Christ is either impossible, or at best too hard, this book is a must.  Learn how to abide in Christ every day, how Christ is the one who makes this possible, and event wants this for you. Each time I read it I gain new insight.  Definitely one of the top 5 books I have read.
